6. Shining Soft and Singing

Track 6 | Footprint | Bruce Stephen Foster

Oh, I couldn’t touch your secret silence

shining soft and singing,

like a ragamuffin minstrel that got busted for believing

in the hurt and searching kisses that you hesitate to share

And I couldn’t help but wonder

all last night while you were sleeping,

how your hands were tightly frightened

and your lips were softly moving

saying words you would in waking never wanted me to hear

Still you think that I’m unknowing

seldom speaking of the distance

that your random barbs betray,

and your pale pretense of feeling,

while you close your eyes and love me through the colors of last year

So, I couldn’t bear the comfort

that to share your sacred secrets

would allow me to caress your inward lonely longtime darkness,

knowing always that someday you’d give them back and disappear
